Bookshop

bookshop poem

Kid’s books, cookbooks
Books for Ma
Black books, red books
Socialist star
Books on Huntin’, Shootin’, Fishin’
Books that show you the life you’re missing
Books on Popper, Freud and Marx
Edna O’Brien, Muriel Spark
Kafka, Beckett, Joyce, Donleavy
Books that weigh light
Books that weigh heavy
Books with meaning deep within them
Books for prizes
So that kids can win them

Cityscape clipart

cityscape

A man needs to carry his Laser Quest pistol
But then they are not replaceable
Nor are there parts available
The men who venture out at night on the streets of the city
Carry side arms for protection.
For where the lamps are no longer lit
There are others waiting to hit them
On mornings when the first warming of the sun
Crosses the streaked and crumbling malls,
When the stained walls lose their shade,
Sometimes you will see human debris not yet scavenged away,
Sometimes a body stiff and distorted
Individuality dispersed by the mist
Sometimes only a scrap of clothing
That speaks of less than nothing.
A man needs to carry his Laser Quest pistol
But then they are not replaceable
Nor are there parts available

ROCK ‘N’ROLL STAR

rr star

A ‘41 not ‘59

Just like Eddie I’m gonna shine

And be a Rock and Roll star

Me record on the record machine

And a TV commercial selling blue jeans

Like a Rock and Roll star

Buy a little property in the caribbean

Build meself a recording studio

Do all me records on the drum masheeun

And listen to me every night on the radio

Me record will be number one

Doing all the interviews on Radio One

Like a Rock and Roll star

Doing all the chat shows on the television

Promoting meself in the usual way

Don’t give a bugger about the competition

Musicians don’t worry bout things like that anyway
